Sorrento: summer on display

This year in Sorrento summer meets art once again. The beautiful and very central Villa Fiorentino, home of the Sorrento Foundation, often hosts relevant artistic exhibition: the summer of 2019 is dedicated to Matisse, with an international event that is part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the artist's birth.

Sorrento offers its visitors more than one hundred works by the French maestro, coming from the Pablo Picasso museum in Munster, the Matisse Museum in Nice, Montecarlo and from several private collections as well.

Matisse in Sorrento, between theater, travels and sacred art

"Il Sipario della Vita" (the Curtain of Life), this is the event's title, is an unmissable opportunity to explore those aspects of Matisse's activity that are perhaps less known to the general public, such as his colorful papiers découpés, collage on canvas on the theme of circus and the artist's travel memories. The section dedicated to Odalisques is also very interesting, because it investigates Matisse's relationship with the female world, a central and recurring theme of his creative universe.
The exhibit leaves plenty of room in particular to the Cateau Cambrésis master's activity of set designer and costume designer. In fact there are several drawings on show, alogside with lithographs and sketches, made in 1919 for the staging of Stravinsky's work, "The song of the nightinglae”, in which Matisse took indeed care of costumes and scenographies.
Thanks to the multimedia contents it will also be possible to see more closely the path that led Matisse to the realization of the decorative plant of the Chapel of Saint-Marie du Rosaire. With its paintings and polychrome stained glasses, the chapel is one of the major works of the last years of activity of the artist, who was in love with that place of peace in the small town of Vance.
The exhibition is open every day until 20 October 2019.
